Why “No Pain. No Gain.” is Old News

Did you know that The Rock and Mark Wahlberg starred in an oddly entertaining movie called “No Pain No Gain?” It’s kinda wacky.

Anyway! The adage “no pain, no gain” meant that you had to distract yourself from suffering while trying to progress toward your goals.

In Pilates, however, we want to connect with the body, not crush it. Everyone knows that when you turn the volume down on the speakers, you can focus and see the addresses of the houses better. Harsh and damaging coaching and inner dialogue disconnect us from ourselves and one another.

Let’s let go of looking at practice, consistency, and hard work as punishment. Instead, try these things to quiet the noise:

  1. Start slow

  2. Listen to your body

  3. Watch the magic happen

Building this connection with yourself with these tools helps to eliminate distraction and builds self-trust.
